Soccer Tournament

Love to play soccer? The Geography Deparment's annual Cosgove Von Humboldt
Futbol Tournament is coming up! Come play against geography undergrads, grad
students, TAs, and even PROFESSORS! This is a great opportunity to meet
people and de-stress after midterms. We play on a small field with small
goals, so fitness ability isn't an issue.

All skill levels are welcome!! Teams will have a mix of skill levels.

The tournament will take place on May 18 & May 19 on the IM Field.

Coming up next week we have a very enthusiastic speaker, Zaki Mustafa, from LA Department of Transportation coming to speak about his job, opportunities created by being an ITE member, and current transportation projects and plans. Zaki is the chief of operations for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and also the International Vice President of ITE. He has been working in the transportation industry and in ITE for over 30 years. LADOT looks for a wide range of students, including those who know GIS software, so this is a great opportunity to network and learn more about the industry!

Hello Geographers!

Join us for our second club meeting this THURSDAY April 26 at 5-6pm at Bunche

Please note that we are NOT meeting on wednesday for this week due to concerns
with busy midterm schedules in general.

This week's meeting is very important so we look forward to seeing many of you
attend!

For the first half of the meeting, we will have the ELECTIONS for next year's
board members. This is a great leadership opportunity for undergraduate and
graduate students to take over the geography club to create a meaningful space
for networking and sharing of academic interests in geography and in related
fields. For those interested, please consider the position of your interest
(president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, publicity, website
coordinator, social event organizer, etc.) and prepare ideas of how you would
like to contribute to the club.

For the second half, we have a special guest speaker, Rick Miller, a phD
geography student, who will give us a talk on his studies of cultural

Prof. Stanley Trimble is joining us in one of his last Presentations before he retires. He will be sharing with us his passion for hydrology and the environment and will give a talk about “Hydro-climatology and Comparative Soil Erosion in Eastern North America and Western Europe”. Stanley W. Trimble (Ph.D., Georgia, 1973) is a Professor with research interest on soil and water conservation, hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, research techniques, and environmental history. He teaches classes in hydrology and the environment.

Hydroclimatology and Comparative Soil Erosion in Eastern North America and Western Europe

Extreme soil erosion and hydrologic disruption during the historical period of European agricultural occupance has been well documented for several regions of the US. Why was it so much more severe in the US than in Western Europe, the place of origin of most settlers? While choice of crops, agricultural practices, literacy, tenancy and economic factors were all contributing factors, differences of hydroclimatology, specifically rainfall intensities and amounts, also played a strong role. The climate of Western Europe is Marine West Coast (Koeppen:Cfb)while that of Eastern North America is Humid Subtropical or Humid Continental(Cfa, Dfa). While both regions are humid, Western Europe tends to have well-distributed rainfall occurring in moderate storms whereas Eastern North America has more erratic rainfall occurring in often intense storms. A comparison of long-term frequency-magnitude relationships of storms shows much lower values for Europe than for America. For example, a 100-year-24 hour event in the southeastern US is about 2-4 times as great as that in lowland England. European settlers simply did not have the agronomic and engineering techniques to deal with this excessive rainfall and such techniques were not developed in he US until the 1930s. . Agricultural fields in Britain generally require no engineering such as terracing, contour strip cropping, or even contour plowing to handle excess water but they are absolutely required in the eastern US. There is evidence that climate change will affect these features. For example, intense rainstorms in southern England in recent years have flooded roads (because the drains were inadequate), eroded fields (no conservation measures), and flooded villages (storm channels were too small).For future projects, Europeans may well have to look to the engineering practices developed and used in the eastern US.

This project that focuses in helping out a group of women survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, started in Thailand and it is been continued by a group of UCLA students. They will discuss how the project started and how they want to reach their goal to "ensure the economic sustainability of these handicraft groups in order to promote the overall sustainability of their livelihoods."

Call for Summer Interns : All degree levels (Bachelor's, Masters, PhD)
are welcomed to apply.

DEVELOP is a NASA Science Mission Directorate Applied Sciences Training
and Development Program. Students work on earth science research
projects, mentored by science advisors from NASA and partner agencies to
extend research results to local communities. The projects demonstrate
to community leaders and organizations how NASA science measurements
and predictions can be used to address local policy issues.

Interns work in student teams to complete rapid research projects in 10
weeks using NASA remote sensing data and other data sources.

DEVELOP has opportunities nationwide, but we are actively recruiting for
summer interns at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Leadership
positions available. Students interested in a management/leadership role
are encouraged to include a cover letter expressing their interest.

Applications must be postmarked by February 22, 2010. Applications are

Internships are paid. Rate varies by educational attainment level.
Students are expected to work approximately 35 hours/week. Summer
interns will begin on June 14th, 2010.

Many human and physical geographers have skills in cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

On Demanding a Politics and Practice of Socially Just Sustainable
Development

For nearly 20 years local and regional governments have, for better or
worse, increasingly positioned principles of sustainability in some
aspects of their planning and development practices. These often include:
pocket parks, indicator projects, green architecture, carbon reduction
plans, open space preservation, transit-oriented development and
brownfield reclamation. Overarching development concepts, such as: "New
Urbanism," "Smart Growth," "Compact Urban Development," and "Urban
Sustainability," have thus emerged as operational definitions with much
fanfare from architects, planners, policy makers and political elites.

More recently, critics of sustainability efforts have pointedly argued
that underlying social relations constrain the reach of sustainable
improvements or represent a new culture of consumerism based on principles
of ecological modernization. For instance, the environmental justice
literature demonstrates how "uneven development" plagues the distribution
of environmental costs and benefits. In a similar vein, political economy
approaches show how it now makes economic sense (i.e., the conditions for
capitalist accumulation support this logic) for cities and regions to play
the role of steward with regard to the ecological integrity of a place
while discounting the disparate social impacts of their activities. Still
others argue that sustainability represents a post-political condition,
whereby debates over a "just" society are undermined by a tacit consensus.

While the concepts of social justice and sustainability have been wedded
diagrammatically, analytically and in practice, social justice has
maintained an ancillary position in many analyses. Issues of social
justice are indeed recognized, but are often viewed as an expected outcome
of the system (rising tides raise all ships?), and thus not addressed
directly. In practice, results have been often been disastrous for those
lacking political power.

This session seeks an analytical intervention into the social "injustice
of sustainability." We seek to envision a "neo- sustainability" paradigm
and politics that positions social justice at the core of sustainability
analysis and action. We invite papers that fit into these themes:

· Conceptual Interventions: The concepts of spatial justice,
environmental justice, the post-political, organic regeneration,
vulnerability and adaptive capacity/resilience among others would be
appropriate.

* Methodological Interventions: Are we missing opportunities to
employ interdisciplinary approaches or multiple methodologies to these
questions?

* Case studies: In-depth case studies that show how collective
political action transgresses politics and outcomes as usual. Case studies
should have a strong conceptual framework to guide their analysis.

APCG AFRICAN DESCENT STUDENT TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP 2009

Travel Grants to Attend the 2009 Association of Pacific Coast Geographers
(APCG) Annual Meeting in San Diego, September 30 through October 3
Two awards of $150 each for two Undergraduate Geography Students

Application Deadline September 15, 2009

The African Descent Student Travel Scholarship is a new grant this year.
The purpose of this scholarship is to increase cultural diversity and
knowledge in Geography teaching, research and representation at APCG
meetings through students of African descent. Geography students of
African descent, including Africans, African Americans, and those of
African heritage throughout the world who are now students residing in and
attending colleges and universities within the APCG Region will be
eligible to apply for this travel grant. Awards are to be applied to
travel, accommodations and registration expenses at the APCG meeting.

Application requires two steps:
1) A statement about the student's interest in Geography and the student's
African descent background, and
2) A supporting letter of reference from a faculty member.

For 2009, there will be two $150 awards for undergraduate Geography
students. The students must attend the San Diego meeting and attend the
annual banquet to receive their award. At the banquet, the recipients
will be asked to say a few words about their geography interests and their
African heritage. James Harrington, Professor and Chair, Dept. of
Geography at Univ. of Washington will chair the APCG African Descent
Student Travel Scholarship Fund. James Harrington, Dawn Wright and John
and Bev Passerello will evaluate applications and make awards.
